Pups in the Hood: The Many Perks of Bringing Your Dog to Work

You hear the small jingle. Immediately you recognize the noise and begin to scan the office. Your reaction is almost instinctive at this point, like a human version of Pavlov’s theory.

You hear the light tinkling noise again and zoom in on the source, crouching down with arms outstretched. It’s your coworker's dog, tail wagging and excited for the ear rubs to commence. You can’t help but feel your mood lighten and for just a moment you forget about that spreadsheet or that email.

There’s a four-legged friend in front of you and the morning just got a little brighter.

At TicketCity, we love bringing our dogs into the office. It’s been a thing we’ve done for years, long before it was considered a thing. Big dogs, small dogs, scruffy, fluffy, eager, and shy. TicketCity adores them all.

Besides getting a chance to play with a pooch, one of the primary reasons we love dogs in the office is because of the many benefits it provides our employees, both dog owner and coworkers alike.

That warm-fuzzy feeling experienced when you encounter a furry friend at work -- that’s a real, science-proven perk. Countless studies have been published about the psychological benefits of workplaces allowing your dog to tag along, with the most positive benefit including stress reduction and promoting positive social engagement.

There’s also the pet’s take on the office perk -- young Fido gets to spend more time with their owner instead of potentially destroying the couch out of boredom or eating that takeout left in the garbage that would certainly make for a late night trip to the vet. And then there’s the many extra humans readily wanting to partake in some friendly socializing.

Research is great and all, but we wanted to dig into why some of our employees personally love bringing their four-legged friends to work.

Strummer Hughes

Strummer Hughes

Likes: Chasing squirrels, climbing trees, the St. Louis Cardinals

Dislikes: Balloons, getting down after climbing a tree, Chicago Cubs

Why I love having him in the office: “I love having my dog here because 99% of the time I’m here wishing I was at home with him. It’s also nice because he makes me take breaks and get up to move around by playing fetch or going for a walk outside.”

Eddie Laughlin

Eddie aka Chicken Wing

Likes: Playing fetch with his ball, goofing around

Special Skill: Opening the refrigerator to grab seltzers for mom

Why I love having him in the office: “He always gets so excited to run around and see all his friends that give him snuggles. It also boots moral having pets in the office. Anytime anyone hears a jingle of what could be a collar, everyone pokes their head over to try to spot the dog. When I bring Eddie in I don’t have to see him sad when I leave him home alone.”

Clyde and Minnie

Clyde & Minnie

Likes: Eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner, playing at Auditorium Shores dog park

Dislikes: Baths, videogame character loading screens, door bells

Why I love having them in the office: “Clyde & Minnie like to come to work because they get a lot of attention, there is more space for running, and chances to share my lunch snacks in exchange for ‘good behavior.’ Pugs are the class clowns of the dog world, Clyde & Minnie seem to bring people joy. I like to think they add a little comic relief to the day!”

Maggie McKinley

Maggie aka Mags

Likes: Attention, mud, and water

Dislikes: Only the Ohio State Buckeyes

Why I love having her in the office: “She gets a lot of attention, tires her out, is more exciting for her than being home alone and a morale boost when I need one.”

Bearnard Guiffre

Bearnard aka Bear Bear

Likes: Belly rubs, begging for food, unadulterated attention

Special Skill: Full-on sprints around the sales floor early in the morning

Why I love having him in the office: "Bear makes everyone think they are the only one he gets belly rubs from. He’s a 4-legged walking and barking ego boost.”
